3/8″ Bowl Gouge – with 12″ Maple Handle
$ 119.00Our 3/8" bowl gouge features a parabolic flute and is made from Hardened and Nitrided M2 tool steel. It is shipped sharp and ground with a double bevel. Parabolic flutes give a great combination of strength and chip ejection. They are amenable to finger nail (Ellsworth or Irish) grinds, conventional bowl gouge grinds and the "40/40" grind. The handle is hard rock maple and turned for us in Pennsylvania. The ferrule is stainless steel. Also available unhandled.

3/8” Detail/Spindle Gouge – Unhandled
$ 65.00Our 3/8" spindle/detail gouge has a flute with shallow radius. Shipped with a 45 degree grind, many turners sharpen these types of gouges to a sharper angle, and sometime add a secondary bevel. Many turners who are primarily bowl turners find these much friendlier for spindle turning than using a skew. Also available handled.

Large Negative Rake Scraper – Unhandled
$ 89.00Our large negative rake scraper is made of nitrided M42 and measures 1” across and 5/16 thick. The bottom edges are radiused so that you can use it at an angle for even more effective cutting. Sharpening just the bottom bevel maintains the nitriding on the top edge. Over time, you may eventually remove the top bevel and need to regrind it to maintain the negative rake. Just remember, there is heat treated 42 under the nitriding, so you will still have a superior tool. The tang is rectangular, and does not work with our ER Collet based handle system.Add to cartDetails -

Turner’s Edge Turning Tools
$ 65.00 – $ 159.00Turner’s Edge woodturning tools are manufactured by Robust Tools. Bowl gouges have parabolic flutes and spindle gouges have radius flutes. Turner's Edge gouges are made using Nitrided M2 High Speed Steel. All flutes are polished to remove tool marks.
What's special about Nitriding? Nitriding is frequently used on carbide and high speed steel cutting tools to improve their performance when machining metals. Not a coating or plating, Nitriding describes a treatment wherein carbon and nitrogen are added to the base metal and form a diffused zone within the surface of the tool. This zone is up to .002" deep. Nitriding reduces surface friction, improves wear resistance and significantly enhances edge holding. During product development, Robust Tools tested a number of different Nitriding treatments and selected a superior form that works especially well with woodturning tools. To make Turner's Edge gouges, we start with premium high-speed steel (M2). After machining, the tools are heat treated to 64 Rockwell C. The hardened tools then go through the Nitriding process, increasing cutting edge hardness to 1880 Vickers (75+ Rockwell C). Because the treatment is diffused into the metal itself, it will not flake, peel or chip. The result: Longer edge holding and smoother chip ejection from the polished flute.
Parabolic Flutes: Our bowl gouges feature a parabolic flute. Parabolic flutes optimize three things: 1) having a good size flute for chip ejection, 2) leaving enough metal in the gouge for good strength and 3) sharpenability for both fingernail and conventional grinds.
Spindle Gouges feature radius flutes that are not as deep as the parabolic flutes found on the bowl gouges. The radius equals the diameter of the spindle gouge. For instance, the 1/2" diameter spindle gouges has a flute with a 1/2" radius. Diameters: We use the American method of sizing the gouges, based on the diameter, not flute width. All gouges are made from slightly oversized stock, and the shanks are turned to the diameter listed in their descriptions. Lengths: The 1/2" and 5/8" gouges are 11.75" long and the full depth of the flute is 7.5". The 3/8" gouges are 8.75" long and the full depth of the flute is 4.75 - 5". Handles: All of the gouges are are offered with and without handles. The handles are hard rock Maple, and turned to our specification in Pennsylvania. All have stainless steel ferrules. We also offer a line of collet based tool handles and kits to make your own handle using our collet system. Click the product tab at the top of the page to learn more.
