...........................Sweet 16

The Sweet 16 is a 16" lathe with fixed headstock, removable gap bed, 1/2" thick stainless steel ways and industrial grade motor and controls.

The Sweet 16 will give you maximum capacity in a compact footprint.

Removing the gap bed converts the Sweet 16 into a 32" bowl lathe. Moving the gap to the end increases its spindle turning capacity by 14". See animation below.

The corded pendent controller is fitted with two rare earth magnets and can be moved anywhere along the lathe bed, on the leg assembly or on the headstock.

The headstock and bed of the Sweet 16 is fabricated in our shop in Wisconsin from steel. The ways are stainless steel. The tailstock and banjo are cast iron made from our patterns at Austin Foundry in Sheboygan, Wisconsin.

Like our other lathes, the Sweet 16 adjusts to your height.

Short, Standard and Long Bed versions are available.

Sweet 16 Long Bed

The animation below shows a long bed S16: 1) in its normal configuration, 2) with the gap used as a bed extension for turning long spindles, 3) with the gap on the side and banjo positioned to work on the front of the piece and 4) with the gap on the side and banjo positioned to work on the back of the piece. The short bed works just the same.
The individual images from the animation can be found here.

The motor drive (aka: "VFD" or "Inverter") lives behind the black panel that doubles as a tool rack. Another toolrack is built into the top of the headstock.

The Sweet 16 is available with a 1-1/2 HP motor in either 110 or 220 volt. A 2HP motor is also available in 220 volt only.

The big red button is the emergency stop, and also serves as the main power switch.

The spindle lock knob can be see below and a little to the right of the handwheel. Locking the spindle disconnects the controls, so no more burnt belts if you try to start the lathe with the spindle lock engaged.

From this angle you can see the headstock is relieved in front, allowing great access to the back of the work, something you won't find on some popular imported lathes.

There is no belt changing with the variable speed Sweet 16. Low end torque is ensured the use of a vector style motor drive and further augmented by using a smaller pulley on the motor than on the spindle. High end RPM (2900 max) is derived electronically.

48 position indexing is standard and accessed from inside the headstock as shown in the picture.

The Sweet 16 spindle is the same that we use on the larger American Beauty.

A caster kit is available for the Sweet 16.
Jacks are permanently attached to both leg assemblies to rasie the lathe one end at a time.
The casters snap on without tools.
........

The Sweet 16 cannot be fitted with a Tilt-Away because it would interfere with using the gap as a bed extension.
To keep your tailstock from cluttering your work bench and out of the chips, you might consider the optional tool and tailstock rack shown below.
