About Us

About Us:

Thanks for visiting our website.  Our goal is to bring you the finest in woodturning lathes and accessories.  We pride ourselves in listening to you, our customers and non-customers, and incorporating the very best of your ideas into our product line.

We recognize that when you buy Robust, you buy the lathe of a lifetime, and we pledge to do our best to make that dream come true.

All Robust lathes and accessories are made in our own machine and fabrication shop in Barneveld, Wisconsin. What we do not make ourself is sourced from nearby manufacturers. For instance, some parts come from Westwick Foundry in Galena, Illinois, in continuous operation since 1854. We certify all Robust products have a domestic content of over 90%.

Robust was founded in 2004 by Brent English and is a limited liability corporation.

Please take a moment and meet some of our satisfied customers:

Steve Sinner, Bettendorf, Iowa is one of our most recent customers and owner of one fine studio. Steve is a well known wood artist, whose work is shown at prominent galleries and museums like the del Mano Gallery in California and the Museum of Arts and Design in New York. Steve specializes in large vase forms with intricate and elaborate surface treatment.

Phill Powell, Racine, Wisconsin, was our very first Robust owner.  He's a retired art professor and a real pioneer. Phil's long experience as a potter really helps him exploit the power of a turned form. Phil chose the 25" American Beauty with the Tilt Away. Phil continues to give us good advice as we constantly improve our product.
Ed Moore, from Virginia, sold his Stubby lathe to purchase his Robust.  Here you can see Ed in his well equipped studio starting work on a coolibah burl.  Ed is a retired math professor, and has started showing his work in a number of prestigious galleries.  Have a look at his turning at www.burntchimneystudios.com.
Bob Schmitt, Waverly, Ohio is the proud owner of this Robust 25" American Beauty with the optional 24" bed extension and Tilt Away (you can see it in action in this shot). Bob is a dentist, and you can hope your dentist has the same appreciation for fine tools as Bob!
George Troy Hurlbert from rural Kansas is an experienced turner specializing in segmented bowls.  A self-proclaimed wood lathe junkie, George purchased a 18x28 Robust. George even published his own lathe review on WoodCentral and posted it on his website:

If the photos here aren't enough, George also posted his own Robust photo gallery:

Here's John Nicholson from Dane, Wisconsin with the very first Sweet 16. John is a good friend and former president of our local AAW chapter. Because John is close by, we had the pleasure of personally delivering this lathe to his very well equipped studio.
Chris Hartley from Spring Texas is the proud owner of this Robust lathe with all the bells and whistles.  Chris spent a lot of time choosing just how he wanted this lathe set up, but you'd expect that from a fellow with years of experience serving us in the military, ministry and now the funeral and cemetery services industry. Chris is also a very active member of the Sawmill Creek woodturning forum.
This photo of Dan Callahan is taken in David Ellsworth's studio in Pennsylvannia.  David is an authorized reseller and is starting to equip his studio exclusively with Robust lathes as he sells off some of his older equipment.  Here you can see Dan turning with the headstock down at the end of the lathe where he has full access to the work. Nice chips on the floor too.  Looks like Dan knows how to sharpen a gouge !
